Panel: Publications as a metric in promotion and hiring
We will discuss recent changes in the publication culture in the field of optimization and discuss what some deem as undesirable effects of these changes. Specifically, in the last one or two decades, we have been seeing a substantial increase in the number of papers, both posted online and submitted to conferences and journals. The ease at which work (published or not) can be made visible and the rise of online metrics such as Google Scholar puts pressure on researchers (especially junior ones) to focus on their quantity of papers. More importantly, this pressure is reinforced by the evaluation processes for hiring and promotion in academia and research labs, as well as the evaluation process of grant proposals submitted to funding agencies. We will review some data collected via recent surveys and hold a panel consisting of senior faculty members with relevant experience. A significant amount of time will be dedicated to Q&A with the audience.
